How to Spot Hidden Roof Damage After an Alabama Hailstorm

Inspecting a roof for storm damage in Alabama

Alabama weather is unpredictable. One minute it's a sunny afternoon in Birmingham, and the next, a severe line of thunderstorms is dropping quarter-sized hail on your neighborhood. While heavy wind and massive hail will cause obvious destruction, the most dangerous type of roof damage is often completely invisible from the ground.

If you wait until you see a water stain on your living room ceiling, the damage to your home's structural integrity has already been done. Here is what you need to know to spot hidden damage before it leads to a catastrophic failure.

1. Granule Loss in Your Gutters

Asphalt shingles are coated in protective mineral granules that shield the asphalt backing from the sun's harsh UV rays. When hail strikes your roof, it acts like a hammer, knocking these granules loose.

What to look for: Check your gutters and downspout splash blocks. If you see a heavy accumulation of black, sandy sediment after a storm, your shingles have lost their armor. Without these granules, the exposed asphalt will quickly crack and leak under the Alabama sun.

2. "Bruised" Shingles

Hail doesn't always crack a shingle in half. More often, it leaves a "bruise." A bruised shingle looks like a small, dark, circular indentation. When you run your hand over it, it feels softer than the surrounding area.

These impacts fracture the fiberglass matting underneath the shingle. Over time, water will seep through this micro-fracture, rotting the wood decking beneath it.

3. Lifted or Creased Shingles (Wind Damage)

It's not just the ice that causes problems—the sheer force of straight-line winds can break the adhesive seal on your shingles. Once the seal is broken, the wind lifts the shingle and bends it backward, creating a visible horizontal crease.

4. Collateral Damage

If you aren't comfortable climbing a ladder (which we highly advise against for safety reasons), you can look for collateral signs of hail damage around your property. If hail was hard enough to damage your roof, it likely damaged other items as well.

When to Call a Professional

Insurance companies typically place a strict time limit on how long you have to file a storm damage claim (often one year from the date of the storm). If you suspect your home was in the path of a storm, it is imperative to have a trained professional conduct a thorough inspection.
